Hello wonderful parents!! This information will run us through next week :) With Monday being a holiday I am going to give you all the info today! The most important probably for you is that we WILL NOT having editing paragraph writing homework for the next two weeks! Enjoy the break :) This week we started off with a bang with a UGA specialist coming to jump start our composting! The kids were amazing during the presentation! In other news this Friday is Foundation Friday and the kids can wear their favorite team jersey to school for a dollar! We do have testing coming up on September the 13th through the 21st. More to come on this. Last important date is Monday is a holiday so enjoy the time off!
For the next two weeks our curriculum is as follows... Math: word problems with rounding, adding and subtracting large numbers and introducing multiplication by relating it to equal groups. Reading: We are working on the different genres, finding theme and responding to literature. ELA: We are working on parts of speech Science: Soil Social Studies: Resources Homework: Book bag activity due Friday; correct and return due Wednesday and no writing for the next two weeks. Also progress reports come home Wednesday. This is a change as I said it would be today. I have also posted the new specials calendar! Thanks for all your support!!

We have made it a month!! This Friday marks 4 1/2 weeks of the semester :) This first progress report cycle will be less on number grades but on the areas we are needing to work in. These reports will come home next Monday in the red folder. Today the red folder will come home with your students papers in them. Last week we spent time in class correcting their papers to make sure they knew what we expected. This week I have written "please correct and return" on papers that need some extra attention. These papers will not be due back until Wednesday of this week. Please spend some time correcting your students work on a separate sheet of paper and send all papers back in with the extra sheet stapled to it. If there is no note on your students paper then you do not have to correct or return this work.
This week I have also changed my procedure for the paragraph writing. There has been a lot of confusion with this so I have made it an assignment for tonight, Monday the 22nd. Your student had time today in class to brain storm and write their rough draft. Tonight please edit these papers for spelling, grammar and punctuation ONLY. They will not rewrite anything at home. Some students had a hard time getting started this morning and you might see that they did not completely finish their rough draft. They will need to finish this first and then edit with you. Again this is due back tomorrow. This week we will be focusing on Story elements in reading and really focusing on analyzing the characters in stories. In math we will continue to work on place value and really begin digging into different strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems with large numbers. In Science we are working through inquiry stations and focusing on rocks and minerals. We will still be looking at Greece and their influence on us today. We also are starting our CAFE/daily 5 rotations for reading and our daily 5 math centers. This is when we will start working with individual students and really focusing on their individual needs. I can't wait to see their growth :) One more area we are really working on and will become a source of point reduction on papers is using our strategies. We have taught the students many reading and math strategies and at this time all students are required to use these. We were pretty lax with them last week BUT points will start being deducted with strategies are not used and shown. Homework remains pretty much the same with book bag activities due Friday. The writing is the same BUT the due date is Tuesday. Correct and return is new but is not due until Wednesday. I have also told the students they can begin bring their devices tomorrow to use during our rotations. Please make sure you have downloaded all the suggested apps/websites. These are on the eBook. I want to also clarify "check marks" on papers. If there is a check mark that means it was graded for completion and most likely completed as a class or gone over as a class. These will not be in the grade book. I hope you all have a great week :) It was a great Open House last Thursday and I wanted to thank all of you who could make it. Please no guilt if you couldn't as I didn't go to my 1st graders either :) hehe If you were not able to attend I did send home all paper work Friday. Please send all paper work back as soon as possible so we may start BYOD :)
This week we are focusing on place value and value in math along with writing numbers in different ways. We are also going to be working on graphing our Olympic outcomes which will try in math and science together. During our reading time together we are pulling in Ancient Greece even more by using these passages to learn different reading strategies. Ask your student about the strategies we have learned so far. In language arts we are working on brainstorming for our writing and nouns in grammar. We also will be introducing our daily 5 and CAFE rotations. Lastly we are working on what science is and how it is all around us. Homework this week still continues to be our writing paragraphs that are due Thursday and our book bag activities due Friday. Don't forget you also have homework to sign the agenda and send back all paper work. Picture day is this Wednesday and we also have an in house field trip Friday. A fun filled week is ahead :) Please let me know if you have any other questions. Welcome to the second week of school :) We are starting to really pick up the pace in class. This week we will begin our reading book bag activities for homework. We have covered this greatly and in detail in class so please have your student explain everything to you :) We are continuing to graph and discuss the Olympics here at school so if you allow your child to watch TV please let them watch some of the events nightly. Our weekly paragraph will also be coming home tonight or tomorrow. This is the weekly writing where your students will brainstorm and pre-write here at school and then bring it home for editing and revising. We will then write our final copy Thursday. Please help your student revise and edit their paragraph in their journals. It is VERY important that the journals come back and forth DAILY as we use them in class. We will also begin checking agendas in the morning for a parent signature, this is not meant for parent/teacher notes just a signature. Also this week we will start writing citations your students have received in class that day. We will discuss more of this on Thursday but wanted to let you know what this was.
In class this week we are beginning our number sense unit in math, and learning about bracketing our reading to better comprehend what we read. We will also be going over our reading and math workshop in detail and start these next week. Of course our S/S will focus on the Olympics this week and we will be learning what and how scientist/engineers work for Science. We did start morning work last week and it is going great. We are working on showing all our work for math :) |
